WHEREAS, on June 23, 1936, the 74th U.S. Congress passed a joint congressional resolution that designated the last Sunday in September as Gold Star Mother’s Day; and
WHEREAS, the name, Gold Star Mothers, was derived from the custom of military families putting a service flag near their front window; and
WHEREAS, these flags featured a star for each family member serving their country, with living members denoted in blue stars, and gold stars honoring sons and daughters who had fallen in the line of duty; and
WHEREAS, Virginia recognizes the gold star on a service flag as a symbol of military service members who died protecting our freedom; and
WHEREAS, on September 30, 2018, we honor those Gold Star Mothers and Families who lost a son, daughter, or family member who was serving in the United States Armed Forces; and
WHEREAS, on this day, citizens across the Commonwealth reaffirm their commitment to Gold Star Mothers and their families, who carry on with pride and courage despite their tragic loss;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize September 30, 2018, as GOLD STAR MOTHER’S AND FAMILY’S DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
