WHEREAS, generations of immigrants from every corner of the globe have built our country’s economy and created the unique character of our nation; and
WHEREAS, one in eight Virginia residents is an immigrant, and immigrants comprise more than 15 percent of the Commonwealth’s workforce; and
WHEREAS, the entrepreneurial drive and spirit of our country is fueled by the unique origins of Americans; and
WHEREAS, immigrants are an important part of Virginia’s history, and continue to keep our workforce competitive, our businesses innovative, and our economy strong; and
WHEREAS, immigrants have been tireless leaders not only in securing their own rights and access to equal opportunity, but also have campaigned to create a fairer and more just society for all Americans; and
WHEREAS, despite these countless contributions, the role of immigrants in building and enriching our nation has frequently been overlooked and undervalued throughout history, which continues to the present day; and
WHEREAS, Virginia’s immigrant population adds to the variety of languages, customs, and cuisines, which contributes to the cultural diversity enjoyed in the Commonwealth;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize June 2019 as IMMIGRANT HERITAGE MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
