WHEREAS, on January 26, 1950, the Constitution of India was passed by the Constituent Assembly of India, marking the country’s transition toward an independent republic; and
WHEREAS, known as Republic Day, January 26 is celebrated by individuals all over the world, with a grand parade held in New Delhi from the Rajghat along the Vijay path; and
WHEREAS, the parade is followed by displays from different states of the country, depicting people celebrating the event; and
WHEREAS, the National Council of Asian Indian Associations Inc. (NCAIA) and the Indian American Community Organizations of the Greater Washington Metropolitan Region will host a celebration on January 28, 2018, in honor of India’s 69th Republic Day at the Winston Churchill High School in Potomac, Maryland; and
WHEREAS, this celebration offers an array of attractions, including authentic Indian cuisine, musical performances, youth events, and more; and
WHEREAS, the Republic Day is an opportunity to celebrate Virginia’s thousands of Indian-Americans, whose abilities and contributions strengthen Virginia’s economy, enrich Virginia’s diverse culture, and invigorate Virginia’s communities;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize January 26, 2018, as INDIA’S 69th REPUBLIC DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
