International Non-Binary People’s Day

WHEREAS, International Non-Binary People’s Day was founded to elevate and celebrate the contributions and accomplishments of those who identify as non-binary; and

WHEREAS, July 14th of each year is designated as International Non-Binary People’s Day, which acknowledges the courage and resilience of people who identify as non-binary, as well as raises awareness of the stigma and discrimination faced by this population; and

WHEREAS, the term non-binary describes someone who does not identify exclusively as a man or a woman, and it is imperative that we dismantle beliefs and assumptions that everyone fits into a strict gender binary; and

WHEREAS, it is important to acknowledge the diversity that exist within the non-binary community and that those who identify as non-binary should be acknowledged, accepted, and validated; and

WHEREAS, leaders, LGBTQIA+ organizations, activists, and allies help raise awareness on the importance of inclusion, protections, and respect for those who identity as non-binary; and

WHEREAS, artists, performers, and elected officials who identity as non-binary have helped other individuals who also identify as non-binary find the courage to come out, speak out, and be proud of who they are; and

WHEREAS, an intersectional perspective is needed to effectively address the needs and concerns of individuals who identify as non-binary; and

WHEREAS, it is imperative that Virginians work together to dismantle beliefs and ingrained assumptions of gender identities, expressions, and sexual orientations;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize July 14, 2021, as INTERNATIONAL NON-BINARY PEOPLE’S DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
