International Pronouns Day

10/21/2020

WHEREAS, International Pronouns Day seeks to make the sharing of personal pronouns commonplace by recognizing the importance of learning and respecting peoples’ multiple, intersecting identities; and

WHEREAS, LGBTQIA+ organizations, activists, and allies help raise awareness of the importance of using gender inclusive language and the positive impact of referring to people by the pronouns they determine for themselves; and

WHEREAS, making an effort to use pronouns that people determine for themselves is a sign of human decency and a confirmation that someone else’s sense of self matters, and that no one should intentionally use incorrect pronouns to hurt, discriminate, or emotionally traumatize other people; and

WHEREAS, being referred to by the wrong pronoun particularly affects transgender and gender nonconforming people who have just as much right to be accepted and validated as those who correspond with the gender identity and biological sex that was assigned to them at birth; and

WHEREAS, we will continue to advocate and promote more inclusive changes that so many people in our Commonwealth deserve; and

WHEREAS, it is imperative that Virginians work together to dismantle beliefs and ingrained assumptions of, gender identities, expressions, and sexual orientations;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam (he/him/his), do hereby recognize October 21, 2020, as INTERNATIONAL PRONOUNS DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
