International Transgender Day of Visibility


WHEREAS, in 2009, Rachel Crandall, a transgender activist, founded International Transgender Day of Visibility to celebrate the contributions and accomplishments of transgender and non-binary people; and

WHEREAS, March 31st of each year is designated as International Transgender Day of Visibility which acknowledges the courage and resilience of transgender and non-binary people, as well as raises awareness of the violence and discrimination faced by transgender individuals; and

WHEREAS, transgender leaders, LGBTQIA+ organizations, activists, and allies help raise awareness on the importance of inclusion, protections, and respect for those who identity as transgender; and

WHEREAS, across the United States, transgender and non-binary individuals have been elected to the House and Senate, and have served in appointed positions such as political appointees and as judges; and

WHEREAS, transgender and non-binary activists have led and have participated in movements – from Stonewall to Black Trans Lives Matter protest – and have fought for social justice, gender equality, and equity; and

WHEREAS, it is critical that an intersectional perspective and acknowledgement of systematic racism, classism, sexism, and homophobia is needed to effectively address the needs and concerns of transgender individuals and other gender non-conforming people; and

WHEREAS, those who identify as transgender and non-binary should be acknowledged, accepted, and validated; and

WHEREAS, it is imperative that Virginians work together to dismantle beliefs and ingrained assumptions of gender identities, expressions, and sexual orientations;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize March 31, 2021, as INTERNATIONAL TRANSGENDER DAY OF VISIBILITY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
