WHEREAS, the working citizens of the Commonwealth are known internationally for their leadership and rightfully have earned a worldwide reputation for honesty, integrity, intelligence, skill and diligence; and
WHEREAS, Virginia’s talented workers and job seekers play a significant role in attracting new businesses and industries to their communities and in retaining established employers who will help strengthen our Commonwealth’s economy in the future and to compete in a global economy; and
WHEREAS, the Commonwealth is committed to helping create job opportunities for its citizens and fostering safe, healthy and productive work environments for employees and employers; and
WHEREAS, Labor Day honors workers, celebrates their accomplishments, and offers working families a day of relaxation; and
WHEREAS, on September 5, 1882, the first Labor Day holiday was celebrated, and Congress passed an act on June 28, 1894, declaring that the first Monday in September would henceforth be known and observed as the Labor Day Holiday;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize September 3, 2018, as LABOR DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
