Labor Day


WHEREAS, the working residents of the Commonwealth are known internationally for their leadership and have rightfully earned a worldwide reputation for honesty, integrity, intelligence, skill, and diligence; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth and the country continue to face many challenges in response to the COVID-19 pandemic; and

WHEREAS, the tireless efforts of employers and workers have kept Virginia moving forward by providing safe, healthy environments for workers and patrons; and

WHEREAS, the massive Vaccinate Virginia campaign, which has resulted in nearly 10 million vaccine doses administered, is getting the Commonwealth back to work; and

WHEREAS, all Virginians are encouraged to receive the COVID-19 vaccine so that we can keep Virginia businesses open, safe, and healthy for all; and

WHEREAS, the unemployment rate in Virginia has dropped from 11.3%, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, to 5.8% today; and

WHEREAS, Labor Day honors workers, celebrates their accomplishments, and offers working families a day of relaxation; and

WHEREAS, on September 5, 1882, the first Labor Day holiday was celebrated, and Congress passed an act on June 28, 1894 declaring that the first Monday in September would henceforth be known and observed as the Labor Day Holiday;

NOW, THERFORE, I, Ralph Northam, do hereby recognize September 6, 2021, as LABOR DAY in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to attention of all our citizens.
