Limb Loss Awareness Month

WHEREAS, there are approximately two million Americans living with limb loss or difference; and 

WHEREAS, every day, more than 500 Americans lose a limb; and

WHEREAS, diabetes and peripheral arterial disease are the leading causes of limb loss, followed closely by trauma; and

WHEREAS, studies show that up to 60 percent of amputations are preventable; and

WHEREAS, the number of amputees may double by 2050 unless awareness and prevention improve, which could be helped by a major public awareness campaign and key prevention initiatives; and

WHEREAS, appropriate access to care for people affected by limb loss is vital to enable individuals to reach their full potential, live independently, and live well with limb loss; and

WHEREAS, the Amputee Coalition provides education, outreach, support and advocacy through the National Limb Loss Resource Center for the benefit of persons with limb loss or difference, their families, and health care providers;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize April 2018 as LIMB LOSS AWARENESS MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
