Lissencephaly Awareness Day


WHEREAS, lissencephaly is a rare genetic neurological malformation, causing the brain to have less or no ridges and folds, making it appear smooth; and

WHEREAS, it is estimated about 1 in 100,000 individuals are born with this condition; and

WHEREAS, people living with this condition may also suffer from hypertonia, epilepsy, swallowing disorders, and developmental delays; and

WHEREAS, Lissencephaly Foundation Inc., is a non-profit, charitable organization that helps support these individuals through continued efforts of empowering families and educating communities;

WHEREAS, it is critical that those affected by lissencephaly have access to quality, affordable care, and that research continues in order to find new treatments and a widely available cure; and

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize September 8, 2021 as LISSENCEPHALY AWARENESS DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens
