Lynch Syndrome Hereditary Cancer Awareness Day

03/22/2019

WHEREAS, Lynch syndrome, formerly known as hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer, is a hereditary disorder that increases the risk of developing many types of cancer, including colorectal, endometrial, ovarian, stomach, hepatobiliary tract, urinary tract, and other types of cancers; and

WHEREAS, Lynch syndrome creates a hereditary predisposition to cancer at a high lifetime risk and often at an early onset age; and

WHEREAS, it is estimated that Lynch syndrome incidence rates are approximately 1 in 370 individuals, and it often goes severely underdiagnosed; and

WHEREAS, every person should know his or her family history and share that history with a physician to determine if he or she may be at high risk for hereditary cancers, and to prompt genetic testing; and

WHEREAS, every newly diagnosed colorectal cancer and endometrial cancer should be screened for Lynch syndrome characteristics to prompt risk assessment and genetic testing; and

WHEREAS, a positive genetic test will determine if these cancers are hereditary, and if they will qualify affected individuals for regular cancer screening tests so that growths, polyps, and tumors may be detected early and treated or removed before becoming life threatening; and

WHEREAS, increasing knowledge and awareness of Lynch syndrome diagnoses can increase cancer prevention through regular screening which can lead to earlier cancer detection and treatment; and

WHEREAS, on Lynch Syndrome Hereditary Cancer Awareness Day, we join together to raise awareness of Lynch syndrome in Virginia, and encourage all residents to learn more about this hereditary condition, to collect family history information, and to share this pertinent information with healthcare providers in order to assess individual risk and take steps toward detection and prevention;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize March 22, 2019, as LYNCH SYNDROME HEREDITARY CANCER AWARENESS DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
