WHEREAS, through her observational studies of children and the manner in which they learn, Dr. Maria Montessori developed an innovative philosophy and methodology of education in the early 1900s that continues to influence approaches to learning today, across the Commonwealth of Virginia, throughout the nation, and the world; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia Montessori Association was established to bring together the Virginia Montessori community by promoting excellence in Montessori education; and
WHEREAS, the Montessori Method of Education allows students to learn and grow at their optimal pace in specially-designed environments that nurture the needs and potential of each child; and
WHEREAS, the Montessori method uses materials, techniques, and observations that support the students’ natural development, encourages their learning, independence, and self-confidence, and advances the principles of peace through responsible citizenship; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Montessori offered the foundation for the modern, child-centered curriculum, and Montessori schools have led to a positive change in the ways educators, parents, and communities view the children in their care;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize February 24 - March 2, 2019, as MONTESSORI EDUCATION WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
