National Arts and Humanities Month

WHEREAS, public support for the arts and humanities at all levels in the United States has been critical in enhancing American civilization; and

WHEREAS, we are united through the arts and humanities and strengthened by diverse cultural expression and participation — to the point that we, as a Commonwealth, are now engaged in unprecedented and growing numbers as creators, performers, educators, students, and patrons; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia has demonstrated a commitment and public support for the arts and humanities through the creation of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (1934), Virginia Commission for the Arts (1968), and Virginia Humanities (1974); and

WHEREAS, public support for the arts and humanities has helped to acknowledge, inspire, and cultivate a growing number of Virginians who participate in a diverse creative industry, who give voice to our respective cultures, and who generously offer the fruits of their talents to young and old alike, in urban, suburban, and rural communities throughout the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, Virginia’s creative industries, on average, add $16.9 billion to the state’s economy, provide 120,016 jobs; and yield nearly $8 billion in compensation to Virginia families; and

WHEREAS, the institutions which foster and make accessible the work of artists and scholars enhance the ability of our citizens to participate in a more civil society, uniting us in understanding and appreciating our diverse cultural heritage, and empowering us to imagine and create a shared vision for the future; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia joins the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Virginia Commission for the Arts, and Virginia Humanities in committing to a goal of greater cultural equity;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize October 2020 as NATIONAL ARTS AND HUMANITIES MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
