National Cancer Survivors Day

WHEREAS, a “cancer survivor” is defined as anyone living with a history of cancer – from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life, and there are more than 15.5 million cancer survivors in America; and

WHEREAS, as of 2016, the American Cancer Society estimates that Virginia has 373,580 cancer survivors; and

WHEREAS, more than 1.7 million new cancer cases will be diagnosed in the United States in 2018; and

WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society estimates that more than 42,000 new cancer cases will be diagnosed in Virginia in 2018; and

WHEREAS, increased access to quality cancer care, screening, and prevention – especially among minorities and the medically underserved – is a top priority in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, Virginia has an active, productive cancer survivor population; and 

WHEREAS, hundreds of communities worldwide will be celebrating life on Sunday, June 3;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize June 3, 2018, as NATIONAL CANCER SURVIVORS DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
