National Disability Voter Registration Week


WHEREAS, over 61 million disabled adults in the United States are living with a disability and over 1.6 million reside in Virginia; and

WHEREAS, this year, people with disabilities and their allies celebrated the 31st anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the 36th anniversary of the Virginians with Disabilities Act; and

WHEREAS, voting is one sure way for the disability community to demonstrate their political power in local, state, and national elections; and

WHEREAS, REV UP, “Register! Educate! Vote! Use your Power!” is a national effort to encourage state and local disability community voting coalitions to increase the political power of Americans living with a disability;

WHEREAS, similar to REV UP Virginia, there are efforts around the country to develop state disability voting coalitions that consistently work on increasing the political participation of Americans living with a disability; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth strives to be a leader in inclusivity, and has a vested interest in policies enacted at local, state, and national levels that effect the integration of individuals with disabilities into our communities; and

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize September 13-20, 2021, as NATIONAL DISABILITY VOTER REGISTRATION WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
