WHEREAS, nearly ten million Americans are currently unemployed; and
WHEREAS, according to United States Department of Agriculture, 50 million people in the United States, including 17 million children, are battling hunger and experiencing food insecurity, a two percent increase since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic; and
WHEREAS, the observance of the National Donate a Lunch Day on May 1, 2021, is an opportunity to support the food security program of Humanity First USA, that provides critical services by donating food and raising awareness about hunger issues in the United States; and
WHEREAS, this campaign encourages its supporters to skip lunch on May 1, 2021 and donate their lunch money to Humanity First USA to feed fellow Americans; and
WHEREAS, Humanity First USA has hundreds of caring volunteers across the country who donate their time and energy to deliver thousands of meals annually to our fellow Americans, especially during this pandemic, and served 1.7 million meals last year; and
WHEREAS, Humanity First USA is constantly supporting local food banks and pantries with funds raised through their food security program; and
WHEREAS, we urge Virginia residents to take time on this day to honor National Donate a Lunch Day, the people it will serve, and the volunteers who care for them;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize May 1, 2021, as NATIONAL DONATE A LUNCH DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of our citizens.
