WHEREAS, Virginia is committed to training individuals in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs and degrees; and
WHEREAS, engineers are professional practitioners within the STEM field who use scientific knowledge, mathematics, and ingenuity to solve technical, societal, and commercial problems; and
WHEREAS, engineers face many challenges in the 21st century – from rebuilding localities devastated by natural disaster, cleaning up the environment, and ensuring safe, clean, and efficient sources of energy, to designing information systems that will assist our country in various sectors; and
WHEREAS, engineers serve as a source of encouragement for young math and science students across the Commonwealth of Virginia to realize the power and influence of STEM programs and degrees; and
WHEREAS, National Engineers Week celebrates the many contributions engineers make to our society and thanks them for their continued service to Virginia;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize February 18-24, 2018, as NATIONAL ENGINEERS WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
