National Health Information Technology Week


WHEREAS, the National Capital Area Chapter of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS-NCA) has a diverse membership throughout Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia; and

WHEREAS, the NCA Chapter is the only chapter of HIMSS nationwide that is federally-focused on areas of interest and relevance for its members, such as understanding policy, regulation, healthcare delivery trends, and the applicability of health IT-related tools; and

WHEREAS, HIMSS-NCA members represent hospitals, managed care organizations, integrated delivery systems, and non-profit healthcare organizations, as well as government agencies such as the Military Health System, Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Department of Health & Human Services; and

WHEREAS, HIMSS-NCA's mission is to promote professional approaches to the development, operation, and improvement of healthcare information management systems that benefit the local healthcare community while working collaboratively with the HIMSS National; and

WHEREAS, it is important to highlight the critical importance of secure and efficient information systems to the delivery of healthcare in Virginia; and

WHEREAS, information technology and management systems can be used to supply quality jobs, improve healthcare delivery, enable coordination between providers and patients, improve patient safety, and transform healthcare for all Virginians; and

WHEREAS, health information technology connects doctors and patients to more complete and accurate health records; and

WHEREAS, tools like electronic health records and electronic prescriptions help patients and providers make safer, smarter decisions about healthcare; and

WHEREAS, better technology can also cut costs for providers by reducing paperwork and duplicative tests; and

WHEREAS, Virginia is proud to honor the commitment and service of the Health Information & Management Systems Society (HIMSS) National Capital Area (NCA) chapter, clinicians, information technology executives, directors and managers, who work in the state’s healthcare institutions, payer organizations, the military and other branches of government, academic centers, and supplier and consulting companies during National Health Information Technology Week;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize October 8-12, 2018, as NATIONAL HEALTH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
