WHEREAS, internships are vitally important work-place learning experiences that allow individuals to get first-hand workforce experience; and
WHEREAS, Governor Northam’s administration has had some of the highest-quality, hardest-working interns assist in a variety of different capacities to both learn about Virginia's Executive Branch, while also assisting the Northam administration in its duties and responsibilities; and
WHEREAS, interns have served across many state agencies and institutions providing invaluable support to the function of state government, and the Northam Administration is grateful for their work; and
WHEREAS, making sure that internship opportunities are accessible and equitable is an important part of ensuring that all people have access workforce opportunities and that workplaces are reflective of the society in which we live; and
WHEREAS, Governor Northam, in partnership with the General Assembly, was proud to provide historic funding for the Governor’s Fellows Program starting in the Summer of 2021, ensuring all those participating are paid for the first time in the program’s history and making the program more accessible for those of any background; and
WHEREAS, as the Northam Administration implements the OneVirginia Plan, there will be a focus on implements equitable internship practices at state agencies as an important part of making sure that state government facilitates diverse and inclusive work environments; and
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize July 29th, 2021, as NATIONAL INTERN DAY and all interns throughout the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
