National Preparedness Month


WHEREAS, the month of September is recognized as “National Preparedness Month” and creates an opportunity for every resident of the Commonwealth of Virginia to prepare their homes, businesses, and communities for emergencies and natural disasters; and

WHEREAS, the 2021 National Preparedness Month theme is “Prepare to Protect. Preparing for disasters is protecting everyone you love;” and

WHEREAS, during an emergency, every second counts, and emergency preparedness programs educate individuals and families on how to prepare before, during, and after a disaster; and

WHEREAS, these programs address threats of severe weather, terrorism, and other potentially life-threatening circumstances to make our communities better prepared, resilient, and safer; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Department of Emergency Management leads efforts to promote an all-hazards approach to emergency preparedness by providing ongoing services to include outreach, education, training, and planning to ensure that localities are engaging the community on how to prepare, respond, recover, and mitigate against disasters; and

WHEREAS, emergency preparedness is the responsibility of every resident and all Virginians are urged to make preparedness a priority and work together to ensure that individuals, families, and communities are prepared for disasters and emergencies of any type; and

WHEREAS, all Virginians are encouraged to participate in preparedness activities and become more prepared by making a plan, building a kit, and staying informed;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize September 2021 as NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
