National Public Health Week

WHEREAS, public health is the practice of preventing disease and promoting good health within groups of people, from small communities to entire countries; and

WHEREAS, since 1908, the Virginia Department of Health has provided public health services to the residents and visitors of the Commonwealth of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Department of Health is educating and engaging residents and community partners in order to become the healthiest state in the nation, in keeping with the theme, “Healthiest Nation 2030”; and

WHEREAS, strong public health systems are critical to sustaining and improving community health; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Department of Health provides leadership for the Commonwealth’s public health system, which promotes health through extensive and effective collaboration among a wide range of public and private sector partners; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Department of Health’s public health professionals and staff guide this system by helping communities throughout the Commonwealth promote and protect the health of residents and visitors on a daily basis, as well as during public health emergencies; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Department of Health is committed to ensuring that Virginia families are healthy from the start, and our collaborative efforts with individuals, communities, providers, and policy makers will help the Commonwealth’s next generation become the healthiest state in the United States;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize April 2-8, 2018, as NATIONAL PUBLIC HEALTH WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
