WHEREAS, there are nearly 1.8 million adults in the Commonwealth who are over 60 years old, and this population will expand to 2.3 million by 2030; and
WHEREAS, the Commonwealth is committed to fostering the independence and well-being of older adults through leadership, advocacy, and oversight of state and community programs and guiding the Commonwealth in preparing for an aging population; and
WHEREAS, for over 55 years, Older Americans Month, led by the U.S. Administration for Community Living’s Administration on Aging, has been observed every May and this year’s theme is “Connect, Create, Contribute,” which encourages older adults and their communities to connect with friends, family, and services that support participation in activities that promote learning, health, and personal enrichment, and contribute time, talent, and life experience to benefit others; and
WHEREAS, the Commonwealth Council on Aging, with support from Dominion Energy, has presented 2019 Best Practices Awards to GrandInvolve in Fairfax (First Place), The Legacy Sessions Program with Senior Living Guide, Salem High School, and Marian Manor Assisted Living in Hampton Roads (Second Place), and Care Transitions Program with Senior Connections, the Capital Area Agency on Aging in Richmond (Third Place); and
WHEREAS, the Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services’ forthcoming State Plan for Aging Services, developed in collaboration with the 25 Area Agencies on Aging and statewide and local partners, advances home and community-based services, encourages regional collaborative initiatives, and champions efforts to provide person-centered supports to older adults and caregivers;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize May 2019 as OLDER VIRGINIANS MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
