WHEREAS, the health and safety of all Virginians is important to the happiness, prosperity and well-being of our Commonwealth's families and communities; and
WHEREAS, professional medical coders provide invaluable support to physicians, hospitals, clinics, insurance payers, and patients; and
WHEREAS, Virginia's Professional Medical Coders translate the details of patient visits into codes used by insurance companies and governmental payers for timely claims processing and provider reimbursement while ensuring compliance and ethics standards are upheld; and
WHEREAS, it is important to recognize that all citizens who receive healthcare treatment in our Commonwealth benefit from the expertise and professionalism of Virginia's professional medical coders; and
WHEREAS, Virginia's professional medical coders skillfully identify patterns of disease, illness, and injury within populations; and
WHEREAS, the use of medical codes for disease and injury prevention has contributed to a greater understanding of the correlations between illness, injury and treatment in a variety of medical conditions, including heart disease and stroke, viral infections, infectious diseases and motor vehicle, and workplace injuries; and
WHEREAS, the need for qualified professional medical coders continues to increase nationally in physician offices, outpatient and hospital settings in the Commonwealth of Virginia; and
WHEREAS, Virginia’s local chapters of AAPC and all medical coders throughout the state of Virginia are dedicated to the health of our citizens; and
WHEREAS, the integrity and high standards of medical coders have contributed to the US Department of Health and Human Services’ campaign against fraud, waste, and abuse in medical reimbursement; and
WHEREAS, it is important to encourage all Virginians to educate themselves on the impact of Virginia's medical coders on our health care system and to support research and education programs designed to support these professionals in their continuous efforts;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize October 5, 2018, as PROFESSIONAL MEDICAL CODERS DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
