WHEREAS, prostate cancer is cancer that occurs in the prostate, and is the most common type of cancer and the second cause of cancer-related deaths among men in the United States; and
WHEREAS, in 2021, 99.4 in every 100,000 individuals will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and 19.7 in every 100,000 individuals will die from this disease, in Virginia; and
WHEREAS, currently, 3.1 million individuals with a prostate have been diagnosed with this disease, and one in every eight individuals will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime; and
WHEREAS, individuals with a genetic predisposition of prostate cancer are at a much higher risk of developing this disease; and
WHEREAS, by testing an individual’s blood, it is possible to diagnose and treat prostate cancer before symptoms start; and
WHEREAS, late stage prostate cancer commonly spreads to bones, which can cause pain in the hips, spine, ribs, or other areas in the body; and
WHEREAS, the five-year survival rate approaches 100 percent when prostate cancer is diagnosed and treated early, but drops to 30 percent when it spreads to the other parts of the body; and
WHEREAS, individuals diagnosed with prostate cancer should speak with their physician and other health care providers to learn more about the disease and find support groups and services within community; and
WHEREAS, it is vital that those affected by prostate cancer have access to quality, affordable care; and
WHEREAS, Prostate Cancer Awareness Month is intended to increase public knowledge, education, and understanding of this disease, in order to improve patient outcomes and save lives;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize September 2021, as PROSTATE CANCER AWARENESS MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
