WHEREAS, teacher quality is a critical factor in enhancing student learning and ensuring that Virginia’s classrooms are culturally responsive, inclusive spaces; and
WHEREAS, Richmond Teacher Residency (RTR), a partnership between the VCU School of Education and four school divisions, recruits, prepares, and supports the retention of extraordinary educators who are committed to disrupting education inequities for systemically underserved populations; and
WHEREAS, the retention rate of first-year teachers is 34% higher among RTR graduates than that of non-RTR first-year teachers; and
WHEREAS, has prepared 219 teachers; served 56 schools, trained 151 mentors, and served 15,000 students in Richmond Public Schools, Petersburg City Public Schools, Henrico County Public Schools, and Chesterfield County Public Schools; and
WHEREAS, the National Center for Teacher Quality (NCTQ) ranked RTR in the top 99 percentile of the nation’s alternate route programs;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize April 15, 2021, as RICHMOND TEACHER RESIDENCY DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
