WHEREAS, public transportation creates economic opportunity, facilitates access to jobs and healthcare, and makes efficient use of resources; and
WHEREAS, investment in transportation generates substantial economic returns and creates and supports thousands of jobs; and
WHEREAS, public transportation is a preferred mode of travel for many Virginians and provides a vital service for the disabled, the elderly, and for those who cannot or choose not to drive; and
WHEREAS, public transportation alleviates congestion by reducing the number of cars on highways and can be an economically and environmentally wise choice by reducing our consumption of fuel; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation is devoted to improving the mobility of people and goods, while expanding transportation choices in the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, the Commonwealth is committed to supporting the use of public transportation options throughout Virginia based on the many benefits that transit can provide; and
WHEREAS, Try Transit Week encourages Virginians to try available public transportation options such as buses, passenger rail, vanpools, or ferry services;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize September 17-21, 2018, as TRY TRANSIT WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
