Virginia Bike to Work Week and Bike to Work Day


WHEREAS, bicycling is a fundamental mode of transportation and an integral component of efficient transportation networks; and

WHEREAS, bicycle commuting is encouraged as a travel option and an effective means to reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality, and conserve energy; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia recognizes that bicycle commuting benefits both employees and employers through better health and fitness and reduced commuting and parking costs; and

WHEREAS, Virginia is home to an expansive public bicycle network, including hundreds of miles of bike lanes and bicycle trails, such as W & OD Trail, Virginia Capital Trail, New River Trail, High Bridge Trail, Virginia Creeper Trail; and

WHEREAS, many cities, counties, and schools in Virginia have implemented bikeshare programs and many transit agencies have bike racks on buses; and

WHEREAS, bicycling activities and attractions have great potential to positively impact Virginia’s economy and tourism industry and stimulate economic development by making Virginia attractive to businesses and citizens who enjoy the outdoors and healthy lifestyles;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize May 14-18, 2018, as VIRGINIA BIKE TO WORK WEEK and May 18, 2018, as BIKE TO WORK DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
