WHEREAS, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Virginia nurses have been an unwavering, frontline force against the virus through their tireless service, often risking their own health for the health of their patients; and
WHEREAS, there are over 130,000 individuals licensed as nurses in Virginia, comprising a large percentage of Virginia’s healthcare workforce that undoubtedly improves the health of Virginians, and
WHEREAS, nurses work collaboratively with physicians, other healthcare clinicians, and wellness practitioners to serve and care for individuals, families, and communities across a wide range of settings; and
WHEREAS, professional nursing has been demonstrated to be a crucial component of safe and high quality care, and nurses are consistently ranked as the most ethical and trusted profession; and
WHEREAS, the demand for nursing services will be greater than ever due to the growing and aging population; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia Nurses Association, along with the American Nurses Association, has declared the week of May 6-12 as National Nurses Week in celebration of the over four million nurses who protect and promote the health of their communities nationwide;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize May 6-12, 2021, as VIRGINIA NURSES WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
