Virginia Spirits Month

WHEREAS, September is recognized as Virginia Spirits Month to celebrate and promote Virginia as the Birthplace of American Spirits – with more than 70 Virginia distilleries that are flag bearers of our nation’s history; and

WHEREAS, the care and craftsmanship displayed by our distillers is drawing global attention to Virginia, further positioning the Commonwealth as a culinary destination and as a region for high-quality distilled spirits production; and

WHEREAS, enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike can enjoy the diverse categories of distilled spirits produced in the Commonwealth, including whiskey (bourbon, rye, single malt, moonshine), brandy, gin, rum, and vodka; and

WHEREAS, in addition, Virginia also produces several lesser known unique spirits, such as aquavit, pastis, absinthe, various flavored liqueurs, and more; and

WHEREAS, supporting Virginia distilled spirits doesn’t just support our local economies, but also local farmers, as many of our distillers depend on Virginia’s agriculture as the foundation for the raw materials used for producing our spirits; and

WHEREAS, in fact, over 70% of the grains and fruits used to produce Virginia distilled spirits are grown right here in Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Virginia’s distilled spirits industry is performing better than ever, bringing forth over $163 million dollars in economic impact to the Commonwealth and employing approximately 1,500 Virginians; and

WHEREAS, Virginia distillers encourage the safe and responsible consumption of all alcoholic beverages; and

WHEREAS, Virginia is for Spirits Lovers;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize September 2020 as VIRGINIA SPIRITS MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
