WHEREAS, September is recognized as Virginia Spirits Month to celebrate and promote Virginia as the Birthplace of American Spirits – with more than 61 Virginia distilleries that are flag bearers of our nation’s history; and
WHEREAS, the care and craftsmanship displayed by our distillers is drawing global attention to Virginia, further positioning the Commonwealth as a culinary destination and as a region for high-quality distilled spirits production; and
WHEREAS, enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike can enjoy the diverse categories of distilled spirits produced in the Commonwealth, including: whiskey (bourbon, rye, single malt, moonshine), brandy, gin, rum, and vodka; and
WHEREAS, by supporting Virginia distilled spirits, citizens support our local economies and farmers, as many of our distillers depend on Virginia’s agriculture as the foundation for the raw materials used for producing our spirits; and
WHEREAS, Virginia’s distilled spirits industry employs about 1,500 Virginians, and is performing better than ever, resulting in more than $163 million dollars in economic impact to the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Virginia distillers and all agencies of Virginia state government encourage the safe and responsible consumption of all alcoholic beverages; and
WHEREAS, Virginia is for Spirits Lovers;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize September 2019 as VIRGINIA SPIRITS MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
