WHEREAS, founded in 1974, the Washington Capitals are a professional hockey team in the National Hockey League with a loyal and passionate fan base in the Washington Metropolitan area, especially in the Commonwealth of Virginia; and
WHEREAS, the Washington Capitals entered the playoffs as the best team from the Metropolitan Division, finishing the regular season with forty-nine wins and twenty-six losses; and
WHEREAS, the Washington Capitals defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets, the Pittsburgh Penguins, and the Tampa Bay Lightning en route to the Stanley Cup Final; and
WHEREAS, the Washington Capitals defeated the Las Vegas Golden Knights four games-to-one in the 2018 Stanley Cup Finals, resulting in their first Championship in franchise history; and
WHEREAS, the Capitals demonstrated exceptional teamwork and incredible athletic prowess in the regular season and throughout the playoffs; and
WHEREAS, for the 2018 Playoffs, forward and team captain Alex Ovechkin was the highest goal scorer with fifteen goals, center Evgeny Kuznetsov was the highest point scorer with an impressive thirty-two points, and goaltender Braden Holtby lead all goaltenders in lowest average goals against; and
WHEREAS, their championship victory brought great joy and ignited passionate devotion from fans who “Rocked the Red” all season in support; and
WHEREAS, the Commonwealth joins the Washington Capitals and fans across Virginia in celebrating this remarkable achievement;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize June 12, 2018, as WASHINGTON CAPITALS APPRECIATION DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
