WHEREAS, many Virginians across the Commonwealth have difficulty accessing healthy, affordable food for their families; and
WHEREAS, hunger and malnutrition causes suffering for many in Virginia and globally, with women and children suffering the most;
WHEREAS, established in 1979, World Food Day serves as an opportunity to bring awareness to global hunger and improving our nutrition and agri-food systems;
WHEREAS, 799,620, or one in 11 people in the Commonwealth are currently facing hunger, 214,270 of those are children;
WHEREAS, the COVID-19 pandemic has renewed our commitment to ensuring that all residents have access to the food they need to grow and thrive; and
WHEREAS, the theme for World Food Day 2021 is “Our actions are our future – Better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life”;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize October 16, 2021, as WORLD FOOD DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
