The Office of Outdoor Recreation is a resource to businesses and communities, and an advocate for the outdoors. From the Appalachian Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean, you can find every outdoor experience in Virginia.
Virginia has a vibrant outdoor economy in every region of the Commonwealth. Outdoor recreation contributes more than $21.9B to the economy, employs more than 197,000 people and is a key driver behind the Commonwealth’s $26B tourism industry. Not only does Virginia outdoor recreation create $1.2 billion in state and local tax revenues, it is a critical component of the quality of life and sense of place that Virginia’s top workforce has grown to love.
With a strong density of outdoor companies, the diverse natural assets found across the state, and a workforce emboldened by the outdoors, Governor Northam created Virginia’s Office of Outdoor Recreation July 2019 as a result of the important contribution the industry plays in Virginia’s economy, joining eleven other states that provide a central point of contact to promote and support the continued health of the outdoor recreation economy.
