RICHMOND, VA — Governor Glenn Youngkin today participated in the 345th Tax Tribute Ceremony. The Governor was joined by tribals citizens of the Mattaponi and the Pamunkey Virginia Indian Tribe for the ceremony. Before the tribute ceremony, Governor Youngkin met privately with the Chiefs of the Mattaponi and Pamunkey Tribes.

“Thank you to Chief Gray and Chief Custalow along with all members of the Pamunkey and Mattaponi tribes that were here today to honor this sacred agreement between the Commonwealth and your tribal citizens, I appreciate you adjusting the ceremony to remember the lives lost in Chesapeake," said Governor Glenn Youngkin. “Upholding the trust and treaty responsibilities in our relationship is critical to honoring the past, present and future of our Commonwealth. Today we were reminded that the Spirit of Virginia was present long before it was a Commonwealth. It is critical to emphasize the deep appreciation we hold for our cherished relationships and long history together.”

“Today's Tax Tribute Ceremony honored 345 years of history and celebrated a future of shared peace and prosperity between the Commonwealth and the Mattaponi and Pamunkey Tribes,” said Secretary of the Commonwealth Kay Coles James. “Today reminds us that together, we can accomplish more and better serve all those who call Virginia home.”
