By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:
232nd Birthday of the United States Coast Guard
WHEREAS, on August 4, 1790, Congress created the Revenue Marine to enforce federal tariff and trade laws and prevent smuggling; and,
WHEREAS, in 1915, the Revenue Marine merged with the United States Life-Saving Service by congressional action, thus forming the modern United States Coast Guard, a military branch of the nation’s armed forces; and,
WHEREAS, the Coast Guard enforces laws and treaties, facilitates commerce, saves lives, protects our environment, and deploys for defense operations the world over; and,
WHEREAS, the Commonwealth is proud to be home to the nation’s largest concentration of Coast Guard active duty, Reserve, Civil Service members, and their families; and,
WHEREAS, the Commonwealth is home to the Coast Guard Atlantic Area Headquarters, Fifth District Command, Director of Operational Logistics, Force Readiness Command, and seven major installations—including Sector Virginia; and,
WHEREAS, serving with honor, respect, and devotion to duty, the United States Coast Guard is a singular military presence in the local, regional, national, and global communities, and today, we recognize those who serve and sacrifice to keep our country safe;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Glenn Youngkin, do hereby recognize August 4, 2022 as the 232nd BIRTHDAY OF THE UNITED STATES COAST GUARD in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of our citizens.
