By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:

AmeriCorps Week

WHEREAS, service to others is a distinctive characteristic of Virginians, and throughout our history thousands of citizens have stepped up to meet community challenges by volunteering; and

WHEREAS, AmeriCorps engages 250,000 Americans each year, including 3,800 Virginians, in sustained, results-driven service through AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps Seniors programs; and

WHEREAS, AmeriCorps members in Virginia help ensure students succeed in K-12 and beyond, combat hunger and homelessness, respond to natural disasters, fight the opioid epidemic, help seniors live independently, and much more; and

WHEREAS, AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps Seniors enrich the lives of its members, building habits that create engaged citizens who are active participants in civic matters affecting their communities long after their service terms are completed; and

WHEREAS, in exchange for their service, AmeriCorps members earn valuable work skills and money for higher education to strengthen the lives of their families, communities, and the Commonwealth as a whole; and

WHEREAS, since AmeriCorps’ founding in 1994, more than 21,000 Virginia AmeriCorps members have served more than 33 million hours; and

WHEREAS, AmeriCorps members have earned Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards totaling more than $77.3 million, and invested over 30% of the awards back in Virginia colleges and universities; and

WHEREAS, AmeriCorps Week is an opportunity to recognize the dedication and commitment of AmeriCorps members, AmeriCorps alumni, and their community partners, and to celebrate the impact of AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps Seniors programs, and offer thanks to members and volunteers for making an impact and serving others together;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Glenn Youngkin, do hereby recognize March 12-18, 2023, as AMERICORPS WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
