Strengthen the Spirit of Virginia
Strengthen the Spirit of Virginia

By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:
COPD Awareness Month
WHEREAS, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a progressive lung disease caused by damage to the airways and lung tissue, making it difficult to breathe; and
WHEREAS, an estimated 30 million Americans are affected by COPD, yet only about 17 million have been formally diagnosed; and
WHEREAS, COPD is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, with the projected national economic burden reaching $60.5 billion by 2029; and
WHEREAS, early diagnosis and proper management of COPD can improve quality of life and reduce mortality, making education and screening essential; and
WHEREAS, many individuals with COPD remain undiagnosed and untreated, often mistaking symptoms for the natural effects of aging or other health conditions; and
WHEREAS, health departments and community health organizations play an important role in prevention, education, and outreach to help Virginians recognize risk factors and seek care; and
WHEREAS, the burden of COPD disproportionately affects rural communities and underserved populations across Virginia; and
WHEREAS, increased public awareness can lead to earlier diagnosis, better treatment outcomes, and improved support for patients, caregivers, and families; and
WHEREAS, COPD Awareness Month is a time to raise awareness, promote prevention, encourage policy improvements, and honor those living with COPD who continue to contribute to their families and communities;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Glenn Youngkin, do hereby recognize November 2025 as COPD AWARENESS MONTH in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
