By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:

Donate Life Month

WHEREAS, one of the most meaningful gifts a human can bestow upon another is the gift of life; and

WHEREAS, up to eight lives can be saved through the kindness of one organ donor, and another 75 or more lives may be improved through tissue donation; and

WHEREAS, nearly 17,000 Virginians have received a lifesaving or life-enhancing organ transplant since 1983; and

WHEREAS, there are over 114,000 men, women, and children currently on the national waiting list for organ transplantation, with more than 2,400 in Virginia; and

WHEREAS, tragically, because enough organs and tissue are not available, every day 17 Americans will die waiting for a potential transplant; and

WHEREAS, many individuals donate their organs at the time of their death, giving another the opportunity and gift to continue living; and

WHEREAS, while less common, living donations are possible when donors give part or a full organ to a person in need of a transplant; and

WHEREAS, kidney and liver transplants are the most common types of living donor procedures because individuals can live a full, healthy, and happy life with a single kidney or one lobe of their liver; and

WHEREAS, every Virginian can register to be a donor at the Department of Motor Vehicles or at Donate Life Virginia, the Commonwealth’s donor registry; and

WHEREAS, during National Donate Life Month, we celebrate the life-saving work, sacrifice, and generosity of health care professionals, donors and their families, recipients and their families, caregivers, volunteers, and the many other Virginians whose actions reflect their commitment to help save, prolong, and improve the quality of life for our fellow citizens;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Glenn Youngkin, do hereby recognize April 2023, as DONATE LIFE MONTH in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of our citizens.
