Strengthen the Spirit of Virginia

By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:
Fire Prevention Week
WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all who live in and visit Virginia; and
WHEREAS, fire remains a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally, and the widespread presence of lithium-ion batteries in household devices introduces new and unique fire risks; and
WHEREAS, many electronics used daily in homes, including smartphones, tablets, laptops, power tools, e-bikes, e-scooters, and toys, are powered by lithium-ion batteries, which can overheat, catch fire, or explode if misused, damaged, or improperly charged; and
WHEREAS, the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) reports a rise in battery-related fires, underscoring the need for public education on the safe use, storage, and disposal of lithium-ion batteries; and
WHEREAS, residents are urged to follow three key safety practices: buy only listed products, charge batteries safely, and recycle them responsibly to reduce the risk of fire; and
WHEREAS, lithium-ion batteries store large amounts of energy in compact form, and improper use, such as overcharging, using non-certified chargers, or exposing batteries to damage, can cause fires or explosions; and
WHEREAS, proper recycling and disposal of lithium-ion batteries help prevent environmental hazards and reduce fire risks at home and in the community; and
WHEREAS, Virginia’s first responders are dedicated to preventing fires through public education, community engagement, and proactive safety initiatives; and
WHEREAS, Fire Prevention Week is an opportunity for Virginians to learn and practice fire safety measures, especially within their homes; and
WHEREAS, the 2025 Fire Prevention Week™ theme, “Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home,” highlights the importance of safely using, charging, and recycling lithium-ion batteries to help prevent fires in households and communities;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Glenn Youngkin, do hereby recognize October 5–11, 2025, as FIRE PREVENTION WEEK in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
