By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:

Hot Dog Day

WHEREAS, hot dogs have been an iconic American food since their introduction to the United States in 1871 at a hot dog stand in Coney Island, New York; and,

WHEREAS, according to The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council (NHDSC), about 95% of American households enjoy hot dogs and consume about 20 billion hot dogs annually; and,

WHEREAS, in 2021, American consumers spent approximately $7.5 billion on hot dogs in retail stores; and,

WHEREAS, from small business owners and street vendors to supermarkets, fairs, and stadiums, hot dog sales contribute greatly to the economy of both the United States and the Commonwealth; and,

WHEREAS, ten percent of annual hot dog sales occur in the month of July which has been designated National Hot Dog Month; and,

WHEREAS, citizens throughout the Commonwealth are encouraged to enjoy one of the symbols of American tradition and cuisine — the hot dog;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Glenn Youngkin, do hereby recognize July 20, 2022 as HOT DOG DAY in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA and call this observance to the attention of our citizens.
