By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:

Myocarditis Awareness Month

WHEREAS, myocarditis is a rare form of heart disease that causes inflammation of the muscular layer of the wall of the heart; and

WHEREAS, while cardiovascular conditions are often associated with the elderly population, myocarditis can affect anyone, including young adults, children, and infants; and

WHEREAS, myocarditis is a leading cause of sudden death in children and young adults, and most people have never heard of it; and

WHEREAS, myocarditis has a wide range of clinical presentations and can occur in an otherwise healthy person, rapidly progressing to heart failure and death; and

WHEREAS, the true incidence is unknown due to the variable nature of presenting symptoms and the lack of recognition of the disease; and

WHEREAS, most patients have mild symptoms and recover with simple, supportive care and treatments that are tailored to address symptoms and the underlying cause of myocarditis; and, with research, more is being learned about the condition every day; and

WHEREAS, research is an integral part of the worldwide fight against myocarditis, the causes, the symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment, but public awareness is equally as important; and

WHEREAS, now is the time to focus on informing the public about this typically unknown disease; and

WHEREAS, no one should be alone in the fight against myocarditis;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Glenn Youngkin, do hereby recognize April 2025, as MYOCARDITIS AWARENESS MONTH in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all of our citizens.
