By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:

National Science Appreciation Day

WHEREAS, Dr. Jonas Salk, an American medical scientist, announced on March 26, 1953 that he had developed a vaccine against polio; and,

WHEREAS, the CDC estimates that the polio vaccine has prevented 13 million cases of paralysis and saved 650,000 lives worldwide since 1988; and,

WHEREAS, science has provided humanity with vaccines, antibiotics, surgery, sanitation, increased agricultural yields, pasteurization, safe drinking water, and thousands of other interventions that have doubled the human lifespan in little more than a century; and,

WHEREAS, people have experienced longer and healthier lives, greater convenience and comfort, and enhanced prosperity due to the benefits of science; and,

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia invites residents to show their appreciation for our workers in the fields of research, technology, science education, and medicine. Virginians are encouraged to reflect on and share how scientific advances have improved their lives and those of their loved ones;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Glenn Youngkin, do hereby recognize Saturday, March 26, 2022 as NATIONAL SCIENCE APPRECIATION DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all of our citizens.
