By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:

Poppy Day

WHEREAS, America is the land of freedom, preserved and protected willingly and freely by citizen soldiers; and,

WHEREAS, millions who have answered the call to arms have died on the field of battle; and,

WHEREAS, a nation at peace must be reminded of the price of war and the debt owed to those who have died in service to their country; and,

WHEREAS, the red poppy has been designated as a symbol of the ultimate sacrifice of life in all wars; and,

WHEREAS, the American Legion Auxiliary has pledged to remind Americans annually of this debt through the distribution of the poppy flower; and,

WHEREAS, citizens of the Commonwealth are encouraged to pay tribute to those who have given their lives by making the ultimate sacrifice in the name of freedom, domestically and abroad, by wearing a red poppy flower on this day;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Glenn Youngkin, do hereby recognize May 27, 2022 as POPPY DAY in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of our citizens.
