Strengthen the Spirit of Virginia
By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:
Reading Revolution Week
WHEREAS, October 14 through 18, 2024, is designated as "Reading Revolution Week" leading up to Yorktown Victory Day, which will inspire a love of reading for students across the Commonwealth through stories of the Revolutionary era; and
WHEREAS, learning our nation’s history through stories of America’s founding enriches knowledge, fosters civic engagement, and strengthens our collective identity as citizens; and
WHEREAS, this initiative aims to connect museums, public libraries, and communities, and foster collaboration that deepens students’ understanding of the people, places, and events that shaped our nation’s founding; and
WHEREAS, reading is a fundamental activity that opens the door to knowledge, imagination, connection, and civic understanding, and Virginia is committed to raising standards for student literacy; and
WHEREAS, Reading Revolution Week emphasizes values of freedom, democracy, and civic principles, celebrating the historical significance of the Constitution and the ideals that underpin our great nation; and
WHEREAS, we are approaching the 250th anniversary of American independence that will celebrate Virginia’s pivotal role in the Revolution, and the Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission (VA250) seeks to educate Virginians about their history and civic duty; and
WHEREAS, VA250 strives to share diverse narratives that capture Virginia’s complete story and its crucial contributions to the formation of a more perfect union, promoting unity and understanding among all citizens;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Glenn Youngkin, do hereby recognize October 14-18, 2024, as READING REVOLUTION WEEK in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
