By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:
Scleroderma Awareness Month
WHEREAS, scleroderma, also known as systemic sclerosis, is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes excessive production and buildup of collagen in the skin and internal organs, producing scar-like tissue; and
WHEREAS, scleroderma usually affects persons between the ages of 30 and 50, occurs more frequently among Black Americans than other groups, and of the estimated 300,000 to 700,000 Americans who have scleroderma, 80% of them are women; and
WHEREAS, studies show that Black Americans are inclined to develop the disease at a younger age and experience more severe complications, including higher rates of pulmonary hypertension and interstitial lung disease; and
WHEREAS, while the cause of scleroderma is unknown and there is currently no known cure, a variety of treatments are available that help control symptoms and prevent complications; and
WHEREAS, individuals living with scleroderma often face physical, emotional, and financial challenges that require greater awareness, advocacy, and support from the broader community; and
WHEREAS, organizations throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia and the nation provide programs, support, education, and research dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for persons with scleroderma;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Glenn Youngkin, do hereby recognize June 2025, as SCLERODERMA AWARENESS MONTH in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all of our citizens.
