Strengthen the Spirit of Virginia
Strengthen the Spirit of Virginia
By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:
Thanksgiving Day
WHEREAS, Thanksgiving Day is a cherished holiday, celebrated for centuries as a time to pause and give thanks to God for His many blessings; and
WHEREAS, since President George Washington declared it a national holiday in 1789, Americans have observed Thanksgiving, recognizing “the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly implore His protection and favor;” and
WHEREAS, seventy-four years later, during the Civil War, President Lincoln reminded the nation to be mindful of their many blessings and to not forget “the source from which they come,” that they are “the gracious gifts of the Most High God…” who ought to be thanked “with one heart and one voice by the whole American People;” and
WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia is blessed with vibrant families, communities, schools, places of worship, rich diversity, and a welcoming spirit; and
WHEREAS, Virginians are grateful for their civil and constitutional rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, free from government retribution; and
WHEREAS, we appreciate the dedication of public safety and military personnel who protect and serve, often sacrificing time with their own families to ensure our safety; and
WHEREAS, Thanksgiving is a time for heartfelt reflection and gratitude, spent with family, friends and loved ones, preserving traditions and creating new memories; and
WHEREAS, in keeping with our long-standing tradition, Virginians are encouraged to give thanks to our Creator for our abundant blessings, the opportunities we enjoy, and the enduring strength of our families and communities;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Glenn Youngkin, do hereby recognize November 28, 2024, as THANKSGIVING DAY in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
