WHEREAS, Coach Anthony Guy “Tony” Bennett served as the head coach of the University of Virginia Men’s Basketball Team from 2009 to 2024, building a nationally competitive and respected program while making a profound impact on the lives of countless student-athletes, coaches, and fans throughout his tenure; and

WHEREAS, Coach Bennett led the Cavaliers to extraordinary success, including ten NCAA Tournament appearances and the 2019 NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship, forever elevating the program’s legacy with a school-record 35 wins; and

WHEREAS, Coach Bennett guided the University of Virginia to the ACC Regular-Season Men’s Basketball Championship in 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2023, and claimed the ACC Tournament title in 2014 and 2018; and

WHEREAS, Coach Bennett achieved a remarkable school-record of 364-136 in 15 seasons at the University of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, during his time at the University of Virginia, Coach Tony Bennett was named National Coach of the Year in 2015 and 2018, and he earned the title of ACC Coach of the Year in 2014, 2015, 2018, and 2019; and

WHEREAS, Coach Bennett models his life and coaching philosophy on five pillars passed down to him by his father – humility, passion, unity, servanthood, and thankfulness – principles which have collectively shaped the University of Virginia Men’s Basketball Program into a model of excellence on and off the court; and

WHEREAS, Coach Bennett’s leadership philosophy has not only inspired his players but also the entire University of Virginia community, creating an enduring culture of respect, hard work, and success; and

WHEREAS, Coach Bennett’s dedication to his players, his program, and his community has left an indelible mark on the University of Virginia, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the sport of college basketball as a whole, and his legacy of excellence will continue to inspire future generations of athletes and coaches alike; and

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Glenn Youngkin, do hereby recognize February 8, 2025, as TONY BENNETT DAY in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA as we recognize his remarkable career and extraordinary contributions to Virginia’s basketball program and honor him for his leadership, dedication, and unwavering commitment to excellence.
