By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:

Type 1 Diabetes Awareness Week

WHEREAS, type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone the body needs to get energy from food; and

WHEREAS, type 1 diabetes can occur in children and adults at any age and is not caused by diet or lifestyle; and

WHEREAS, the symptoms of type 1 diabetes—such as extreme thirst, frequent urination, sudden weight loss, fatigue, and blurred vision—are frequently mistaken for less serious conditions, leading to dangerous delays in diagnosis; and

WHEREAS, there are nearly 3,000 diabetes-related deaths in Virginia annually; and

WHEREAS, up to 40% of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) cases affect people who are newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D), and DKA is a life-threatening condition that can be prevented with earlier recognition of symptoms; and

WHEREAS, raising awareness of the signs and symptoms of type 1 diabetes can lead to earlier detection, proper treatment, and lives saved; and

WHEREAS, advocates, families, and healthcare providers in our community are working tirelessly to educate the public and support those impacted by type 1 diabetes; and

WHEREAS, raising awareness of type 1 diabetes supports individuals and families affected by the disease, promotes early detection and treatment, and inspires continued support for research, advocacy, and hope for a cure;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Glenn Youngkin, do hereby recognize July 21-27, 2025, as TYPE 1 DIABETES AWARENESS WEEK in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all of our citizens.
