By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:

Virginia Egg Month

WHEREAS, eggs are a convenient and nutritious food choice for today’s busy lifestyle, and they can be prepared in a variety of ways and used in numerous dishes such as quiches, frittatas, and omelets; and

WHEREAS, the Incredible Edible Egg is part of a healthy diet, contributing to muscle strength, brain function, eye health, and weight management; and

WHEREAS, a single egg contains only 70 calories, is a great source of protein, and is packed with 13 essential nutrients to include choline, folate, iron, and zinc; and

WHEREAS, Virginia egg producers care for flocks ranging in size from a few hundred hens to flocks comprised of several thousand birds, with each laying bird producing between 280 to 320 eggs a year; and

WHEREAS, in 2022, egg production in the Commonwealth totaled 743 billion eggs, which when packaged is nearly 62 million dozen count containers; and

WHEREAS, eggs are Virginia’s 11th ranked agricultural commodity with cash receipts of more than $94 million in 2021; and

WHEREAS, eggs have been and continue to be a staple in Virginians’ diets, consumed and enjoyed for centuries, beginning with those who founded the Jamestown settlement in 1607; and

WHEREAS, May is recognized as National Egg Month, and we seek to acknowledge and thank Virginia egg producers for harvesting nutritious eggs to help meet the demand for this delicious product in the Commonwealth;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Glenn Youngkin, do hereby recognize May 2023, as VIRGINIA EGG MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of our citizens.
