By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:

Virginia Physical Fitness Month

WHEREAS, physical activity plays a critically important role in overall health; and

WHEREAS, physical fitness is a cost-effective, fun, safe, and evidence-based public health intervention to address chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, and obesity, as well as mental illness and substance use disorders; and

WHEREAS, recent research suggests being active for as little as 15 minutes every day can reduce depression by 26%, and additional research shows a 20% reduction in developing anxiety by maintaining higher levels of physical activity; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia is dedicated to improving the quality of life of all residents and visitors through movement to inspire and facilitate a culture of active living; and

WHEREAS, Virginia is home to nearly 1,700 fitness facilities across the Commonwealth, collectively employing over 15,000 people dedicated to supporting regular physical activity, promoting healthier lifestyles, and fostering stronger community connections; and

WHEREAS, healthier lifestyles contribute significantly to the economy through the health and fitness industry, generating over $638 million in economic activity in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, Virginia boasts abundant outdoor recreational opportunities, including hiking trails, over 40 state parks, scenic rivers, and open green spaces, providing residents and visitors with a diverse range of options for physical activity; and

WHEREAS, state agencies, private and nonprofit organizations, and other related groups can serve to enlighten and ignite awareness for sports and other physical activity opportunities in worksites, schools, businesses, fitness facilities, and communities throughout Virginia; and

WHEREAS, in their continuing efforts to improve opportunities to create safe and active play spaces for children, the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth funded the development of nine new playgrounds in high-need areas across Virginia, which are expected to benefit more than 47,000 children each year; and

WHEREAS, to improve the health and well-being of all Virginians, the Commonwealth will promote varied physical activities for persons of every ability to pursue an active and healthy lifestyle and engage in consistent movement throughout their lives;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Glenn Youngkin, do hereby recognize May 2025, as PHYSICAL FITNESS MONTH in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all of our citizens to celebrate the physical and mental health benefits of physical activity.
